QQ Libyan Foreign Minister Abdelati Obeidi on Monday entered Tunisia, heading to the Tunisian island of Djerba, said Tunisia's state-run Tunis Afrique Presse agency.The minister was accompanied by Libya's ambassador to Liberia and a number of consultants, but it was not immediately clear why they were travelling, said the report.
According to Tunisian media, Obeidi's trip is aimed at competing diplomatically with Libyan opposition and trying to garner support from the international community. Libya's government has recently sent envoys to Russia and the Africa Union to seek political support.
In a statement released Sunday, the Foreign Ministry of Libya criticized the visit by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.
Ashton met on Sunday with the opposition leader. She said they had discussed a number of key issues including border management and economic development.
The Libyan statement said Ashton's visit would give the outside world the impression that the EU has recognized the opposition, which, it said, is actually an illegal organization.
Ashton's move was aimed at splitting Libya and ran contrary to the UN Security Council Resolutions 1970 and 1973, which respect Libya's territorial integrity, said the statement.
