At least 12 tons of cocaine were seized on Monday in northern Colombia's historic port of Cartagena, the National Navy said in a statement.

The drugs were all bound for the Mexican state of Veracruz on the Gulf Coast and were hidden in 33,450 units of the normal size of a type of brown sugar known as panela, the navy said, adding that each package of approximately 500 grams originated from the southern province of Valle del Cauca.

"Specially trained narcotics police dogs detected the presence of the hallucinogenic substance in the container of a product derived from sugar cane know as panela," said the statement, adding that members of the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) are continuing investigations into the details of the concentration of the drug.

No suspects were detailed in the operation, which was carried out during the day by members of the Colombian Police and Colombian authorities did not identify any immediate suspects.

Colombian police have seized over 81 tons of narcotics so far this year including 64 tons of marijuana, 11 tons of cocaine and six tons of coca base.
