Singapore's Nanyang Technological University signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday with China's State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA) to provide training for key faculty and management officials from Chinese universities.

The MOU was signed by NTU President Su Guaning and SAFEA Deputy Director-General Li Bing at a ceremony on Thursday afternoon.

Under the agreement, the SAFEA will help identify the training needs of the key faculty and management officials of Chinese institutions of higher learning so that NTU can provide more customized training programs.

The two sides will also boost exchanges, cooperation and partnership between Singapore and Chinese institutions of higher learning. They will also help introduce a service system for foreign experts in China.

Cooperation between top Singapore universities and Chinese universities and government has been expanding rapidly in recent years. NTU started to provide training programs for Chinese officials starting in the 1990s and now its several training programs include both short-term programs and one-year programs, including the mayors' class.

It is estimated that NTU has helped train over 10,000 Chinese officials, through either the long-term or short-term programs.
