The head of Philippines' defense department is asking the public to be vigilant following the arrest of two suspected members of terrorist group Abu Sayyaf in the country's capital.

Department of National Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin on Monday said security forces are already on alert against possible threats arising from the killing of al-Qaida terrorist network Osama bin Laden.

"The people have nothing to worry about. Our (appeal) is let us be alert against the movement of suspicious people and items that they see in their surrounding," Gazmin said.

The appeal came following the arrest of Abu Sayyaf members Imam Arabani Jakiran and Asdatul Sahirun, who were nabbed by a team of soldiers and policemen on Thursday and Sunday, respectively.

Jakiran was arrested at a hotel in Global City in Taguig, where he was working as a security guard. Sahirun meanwhile was arrested at a mall in Malate, Manila.

"On the arrest of the Abu Sayyaf (members) in Metro Manila, you can check that they've been here for a long time already, meaning our intelligence and our military forces are on their toes in doing their job, otherwise we will not know that they are here," Gazmin said.
