The Mexican authorities Sunday ordered close of the coal mine which exploded five days ago, after rescuers recovered the bodies of the last three miners trapped underground on the same day.

The May 3 explosion killed 14 miners and seriously injured a 14-year-old worker who lost both his arms.

Local authorities said the mine, owned by the company Binsa, exploded after methane gas had accumulated underground, and the miners were trapped at a depth of 60 meters.

The accident again raised questions about work safety in a region of coal mines known as Carbonifera, located in Coahuila state about 135 km south of the U.S. Texas border. The region has a history of mine accidents, which includes the Pasta de Conchos mine explosion in 2006 that killed 65 workers.

A Binsa spokesman told local radio that not all of the workers were registered in Mexico's social security system.
