The execution scene of Omar Mukhtar appeared on Gaddafi's uniform as he paid visit to Italy in 2009
While the Libyan state-owned television channel, was broadcasting nonstop patriotic songs, poetry recitations and rowdy rallies supporting the Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, Libya rebels are struggling to counteract government's offensives in media.
The rebels gain power from the country's deceased hero Omar Mukhtar. They regard Omar Mukhtar as one of their own sipirit leaders. His portrait festoons the walls of their liberated cities, cars and homes. This tug-of-war has been going on since a public uprising started on Feb. 17 calling for Gaddafi’s ouster.

Omar Mukhtar, the "Lion of the Desert", who was executed in 1931 after leading the tribes of Libya in a 20-year uprising against Italian colonial rule, is honored as the greatest hero of Libya. His son also endoreses the anti-government campaign.
The rebels cite his most famous words: "We will never surrender. We will win or die." They even use them as a ringtone on their mobile phones.
