The official handover of the International Partnership for Innovative Healthcare Delivery (IPIHD) took place today at a meeting of innovation leaders held during the World Health Care Congress.

The project, catalyzed by the World Economic Forum, was launched at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland in January. This ambitious project, which seeks to identify, replicate and scale up innovative models of healthcare delivery around the world, will move out of the forum's care and will be taken over by the newly-appointed board composed of public and private sector leaders.

"Some of the most groundbreaking health care innovations take place in the most resource-constrained areas," said Olivier Raynaud, Senior Director for Health at the World Economic Forum. "Whether it's a small village in rural Bangladesh with lower mortality birth rates than cities in Western Europe or a bustling eye surgery hospital in New Delhi that is literally restoring vision for 55 [U.S. dollars], innovation is happening everywhere. The aim of this partnership is to improve access to quality, affordable care by identifying, replicating and scaling up innovative healthcare delivery models with proven results."

The project at the World Economic Forum, which is supported by Forum Partners, identified successful, innovative models of healthcare delivery from around the world. One such model case study highlights Medicall in Mexico, which provides telephone-based medical counsel and triage to more than 5 million people in rural and suburban communities. For a fixed fee of 5 U.S. dollars a month billed through the telephone, two-thirds of callers have been able to have their healthcare issue resolved over the phone.

The new IPIHD organization is the result of extensive work with healthcare entrepreneurs to understand the gaps in healthcare delivery and how entrepreneurs, industry players, investors and global institutions can collaborate to scale up innovative models.

"In addition to the goals of improving healthcare delivery in the developing world, IPIHD can have a very positive impact in developed world health systems by building on the learning from emerging markets and replicating successful models from the developing world," said Nicolaus Henke, Chairman of McKinsey's Global Health Systems Institute.

IPIHD will also operate a mentoring program to encourage industry executives to collaborate with entrepreneurs to help build their businesses; host an annual investor-innovator conference; influence governments and regulators through its regulatory affairs group and share knowledge through an online portal. The goal of this new organization is to improve universal access to healthcare within the framework of developing business models, supporting organizations and fostering partnerships for future opportunities.

"IPIHD embodies the entrepreneurial spirit and is designed to identify and implement fast so that we see progress today, not 10 years from now," says Jean-Luc Butel, Executive Vice President and Group President for Medtronic International.

Along with the World Economic Forum, the IPIHD is supported by a range of industry players, including Aetna, Astra Zeneca, Apax Partners, Cisco Systems, Duke University Medical Center, McKinsey & Company, Merck, Medtronic, Novartis, Sanofi Aventis and Zuellig Group.

Following the successful launch in Davos and the inaugural meeting in Washington, D.C., IPIHD will establish a lean operational team to start moving forward with the initial goals of the program. Out of the gate, the organization will launch a website for networking and sharing knowledge, continue its business advisory meetings and hold an annual innovator-investor conference later this year.
