Mountain and River
The river murmurs to the mountain: “I love you,
so I am reluctant to leave you.
Days without you, I am a solitary vagrant
roaming the world.
I irrigate others’ fields
but I really only care about
you.”
The mountain says to the river: “I love you,
so I grant you freedom.
Even if you are a solitary vagrant,
roaming all over the world,
my eyes of love
never leave you alone.”
A Powerful Enough Telescope
If I had a powerful enough telescope
I’d look at the moon-
To see how the Chinese Goddess
Chang E, kills time in her Palace
To see if the five-thousand-foot Cinnamon tree
Is still tall and straight
Also, to see if the jade rabbit
Has produced the elixir of life?
If I had a powerful enough telescope
I’d look at Venus -
To see if indeed a youthful looking elder
Dwells there, determining
When he’ll come to earth to judge
Good and evil
Or to see the stunning Love Goddess
Or her naughty son Cupid
Tossing his curly hair
Flying around, shooting arrows indiscriminately
If I had a powerful enough telescope
I’d look at God of the Universe
To see what he looks like
Or in what fancy building he resides
How he commands the Cosmos
How he comes and goes with no trace
How he playfully arranges my life, smiling
But without a word
In fact, if I had a powerful enough telescope
I’d most like to see you, my love –
Crossing mountains and torrents
To be by my side
Your rosy cheeks
Your soft heart
Your ocean-like gentle eyes
Melting the snow encasing my heart
Drop by drop
the Cabin in the Forest
The cabin in the forest
stands as small as a rabbit hutch
ancient as a stonemill,
contemplating an old grove
with the breeze rustling,
flowers fragrant.
The cabin in the forest
stands with mountains in the back,
sleepy like Buddha’s eye.
Near and in the tranquil yard,
a stream chuckles.
Wild ducks stroll,
and sun kisses a trailing vine.
Holding my breath, I tiptoe
into the cabin’s presence,
old and crisp.
Alas! The door is locked.
No one is in sight.
In the shady path,
birds and fallen leaves
enjoy two stone benches.
Grimly I turn around,
stepping the way I came.
Suddenly from behind
I hear a chortle,
soft like a breeze.
A Moonless Night
the long lasting shower finally stopped.
I sat by the window,
listening to bugs and frogs.
I had no anticipation,
but you suddenly appeared.
The coolness in your eyes
stroked my heart
until it was a tranquil pond.
“Come in,” said you, gently pulling open
the door to my soul –
a door by which I had long lingered
but had no key to open.
Once inside
I saw a completely different world
from which I would never want to step out.
