Peruvian President Alan Garcia announced Wednesday a national day of mourning will be held Friday for the tragedy occurred in Japan where a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami have left thousands of people dead.

According to a supreme decree issued by Garcia, there will be no labor activities and the national flag will be flown at half in all public buildings, military facilities, vessels, police stations and other state dependencies.

The flag will also be flown at half in all the Peruvian diplomatic missions abroad, and Peruvian authorities expressed once more their sympathy to Japan for the damage and loss of human lives.

Last Friday's earthquake provoked a massive tsunami in Japan that so far has left more than 4,100 killed and over 7,800 missing and feared dead.

The earthquake led to tsunamis as far away as Peru, where a number of Peruvian towns were flooded and the Callao port was closed for four days. The closure of the port produced economic losses worth 4 million U.S. dollars, the National Port Company Enapu said.
