A

Have you thought about what determines the way we are as we grow up?Remember the TV program Seven Up ?It started following the lives of a group of children in 1963.We first meet them as wideeyed sevenyearolds and then catch up with them at sevenyear intervals (间隔):nervous 14yearolds,serious 21yearolds,then grownups.

Some of the stories are inspiring, others sad,but what is interesting in almost all the cases is the way in which the children’s early hopes and dreams are shown in their future lives, for example,at seven,Tony is a lively child who says he wants to become a sportsman or a taxi driver. When he grows up,he goes on to do both. How about Nicki, who says,“I’d like to find out about the moon.”and goes on to become a space scientist. As a child, softspoken Bruce says he wants to help “poor children” and ends up teaching in India.

But if the lives of all the children had followed this pattern, the program would be far less interesting than it actually was.It was the children whose childhood did not prepare them for what was to come that made the program so inspiring.Where did their ideas come from about what they wanted to do when they grew up?Are children influenced by what their parents do,by what they see on television,or by what their teachers say?How great is the effect of a single important event? Many film directors, including Stephen Spielberg, say that an early visit to the cinema was the turning point in their lives.Dr.Magaret Mc Allister, who has done a lot of research in this area, thinks that the major influences are parents, friends, and the wider society.

B.There are many poor children in India who need help.

C.Children have different dreams about their future.

D.A lot of people are very sad in their childhood.

In previous generations, young people were under their parents’control;now the teenage children of the West’s richest generation were ready for something to get excited about. The Beatles simply put a spark to a fuse (导火索) that was waiting to be lit.

Everything changed, and what changed for the Beatles was their lives and their working habits,in the midst of the hysterical (歇斯底里) following the band attracted.Because of the demand of the fans to see them perform, they played bigger and bigger venues (meeting places),especially in America.

But John,Paul,George and Ringo became increasingly unhappy that, because of the screaming of their fans, neither the band nor the audience could hear the music.Creatively frustrated and tired of the pressures of life under siege (围攻) from their fans, they retired from playing concerts in 1966 and decided to concentrate on (专心于) recording.

It was from this point that the brilliance of the Beatles really began to reveal itself:they recorded over their career some 200 songs.Never before nor since has any recording and writing group even developed and yet remained the same in the way the Beatles did.

Their songs never lost their universal appeal (魅力) thanks to the warmth and timelessness of their melodies (音调) and lyrics.

John and Paul were powerful singers with special styles. It became clear that, despite the fact that the songwriting credits were always equally attributed to (归因于) them,Paul and John wrote and sang their own songs.George also contributed two or three of his own compositions to each of the Beatles’eleven albums.Even Ringo wrote and sang the occasional song.

D.Its appeal wasn’t limited to any particular time or group of people.

65.What can we infer from the passage?

A.George and Ringo never composed or sang their own songs.

“You’re going to the United States to live? How wonderful! You’re really

lucky!”

Does this sound familiar?Perhaps your family and friends said similar things to you when you left home. But does it seem true all the time?Is your life in this new country always wonderful and exciting?A great many facts show that it’s not easy for newcomers to adjust to life in a new culture. They have to experience culture shock.

What causes culture shock?Maybe the weather is unpleasant.Perhaps the customs are different.Perhaps the public service systems such as the telephone, post office,or transportation are difficult to figure out and you make mistakes. The simplest things seem difficult. The language may be difficult. The food may seem strange to you.If you don’t look similar to the natives, you may feel strange. You may feel as if everyone is watching you.In fact,you__are__always__watching__yourself.

Everyone experiences culture shock in some form or another. But culture shock comes as a surprise to most people.A lot of the time, the people with the worst culture shock are the people who never had any difficulties in their own countries. They were active and successful in their community (社区).They had hobbies or pastimes which they enjoyed. When they come to a new country, they do not have the same positions or hobbies as they already had in their countries. They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity. They have to build a new selfimage.

Culture shock produces a feeling of disorientation (晕头转向),which may be homesickness, imagined illness,or even paranoia (妄想症).When people feel the disorientation of culture shock, they sometimes feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the unfamiliar environment. They want to create an escape within their room to give themselves a sense of security. This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to familiarize the person more with the culture.Familiarity and experience are the longterm ways to settle the problem of culture shock.

We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixedability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming (把…… It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the notsobright child. After all,it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!

Besides,it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills and we find that mixedability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.

In our classrooms,we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups:this gives them the opportunity to learn to cooperate,to share, and to develop leadership skills.They__also__learn__how__to__deal__with__personal__problems__as__well__as__learning__how__to__think,to__make__decisions,to__analyze__and__evaluate,and__to__communicate__effectively.The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.

Sometimes the pupils________________;sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work:it does not matter what age the child is.We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

1.C 2.B 3.B 4.A 5.B 6.C 7.A

8.C 9.A 10.C 11.A 12.A 13.B 14.C 15.C 16.A 17.A 18.C 19.B

20.A

21.A the little money 特指他挣的那点钱;a family表示“一个家庭”,其中a表示泛指。

23.B 去掉it was后句子则变为:In the village________we used to live in ________the accidents happened.

即unless it is treated。

be dressed in...“穿着”表状态。 The little girl was dressed in...,主从句中主语一致,从句中省略了主语和be动词,分词作宾语。

with the villagers seated...

29.D compare...with...把……和…… compare...to...

30.C get/have sth.done

in common

共同的;in theory在理论上;in particular特别,尤其;in practice实际上。

stop/prevent阻止,防止,与from搭配;allow sb.to do...允许某人做……;forbid sb.to do...

not to mention更不必说;in addition to... 之外还;on account of为……

37.C 由主语a truck判断选drove up“开过来”。

44.D dressed as装扮成……

48.B over“从……

50.B when意为“当…… 以来”;as soon as意为“一……就”。

51.A fear“担心;害怕”,与本段开头的in fear of our lives呼应。

52.C drop in顺便拜访;临时访问;in进去(室内),走进;break into破门而入。

53.D talk with sb.about sth.“和某人谈论某事”,为固定搭配。

结合文章开头一段中的“Maybe it’s time to ask your boss for a raise.”

61.C 由文章第二段“Electrodes change the water...power an electric engine.”

A company needs some more new staff members. They put up a public notice in which they say they don’t want people who come from onlyonechild family or people who grow up in the city.Their reason is that they are over doted on at home,so they are discriminated against.

I think this picture gives our family education a good lesson.Firstly, parents shouldn’t dote on their children, but should ask their children to do their own work by themselves and do some housework.Secondly, children should form good qualities, such as bearing hardships, standing hard work, selfcontrol and so on,which are necessary in their future work.If children don’t have good characters, they can’t work well in the future, neither will they make contributions to our society and country.
