For admission to a master's degree or graduate diploma program, applicants should:
have obtained a bachelor's degree from HKUST or a recognized institution, or obtained an approved equivalent qualification;
satisfy the school and department concerned as to their fitness to pursue the postgraduate program; and
have demonstrable English ability to pursue the postgraduate program.

Typically, an HKUST postgraduate program candidate will have a TOEFL (paper-based test) score of no less than 550 (comparatively, 213 for CBT TOEFL, 80 for iBT TOEFL). Some programs may require a minimum score of 600 (comparatively, 250 for CBT TOEFL, 100 for iBT TOEFL).
The typical IELTS overall band score for HKUST postgraduate program candidates is no less than 6.
TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date.
For MPhil degree programs, applicants should:
have obtained a bachelor's degree from HKUST or a recognized institution, or obtained an approved equivalent qualification;
satisfy the school and department concerned as to their fitness to pursue the postgraduate program; and
have demonstrable English ability to pursue the postgraduate program.
For PhD degree programs, applicants should:
normally have obtained a master's degree from HKUST or an approved institution, or presented evidence of satisfactory work at the postgraduate level on a full-time basis for at least one year, or on a part-time basis for at least two years;
satisfy the school and department concerned as to their chosen subject of research and their fitness to undertake the research; and
have demonstrable English ability to undertake the research.

人文社会科学学院则开设硕士及博士学位课程，并为全校本科生提供通识教育。
The School of Humanities and Social Science comprises two divisions - the Division of Humanities and the Division of Social Science. It does not offer undergraduate degrees, but both divisions offer postgraduate work by means of taught Master of Arts (MA) degree programs and the enrolment of research students for the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
The role of the School is twofold. First, its course offerings support the undergraduate students' main specialisations by illuminating the social, regional, and international contexts of science, technology and business enterprise. This is crucial to the education of the region's future leaders and innovators in commerce, industry, the professions and public service. Second, the School offers studies in the Chinese cultural heritage and in other fields, with the aim of extending students' knowledge and widening their field of vision.
