Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Thursday announced an extra 8.13 million U.S. dollars per year of funding for the Australian War Memorial, as it prepares for the Anzac centenary in 2015.

The announcement came as a comprehensive review of funding arrangements for the Canberra museum was ordered by the federal government last year being told its budget was approaching the crisis point.

Gillard said as a "sacred place to all Australians", it is vital the Memorial is funded properly.

"During the course of last year I became concerned that we were not funding the War Memorial in a way which was sustainable," she said in a joint statement with Veterans Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon on Thursday.

"I can today announce we will make available an additional 8.13 million U.S. dollars each year for the War Memorial. This will add to its current resources and mean for the long term the War Memorial is properly funded for the important work that it does."

She said the new funds will ensure the memorial is ready for the commemoration of 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli celebrations that will be held in 2015, and has also appointed Veterans' Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon to oversee the project.

Meanwhile, Gillard also announced an extra one-off payment of 1. 8 million U.S. dollars in funding specifically to begin redevelopment of the memorial's First World War galleries.

Memorial director Steve Gower on Thursday told ABC News that the new funding will allow the Memorial to reverse cutbacks in its programs, and in particular enabling teams to be put together to meet the very high expectations of the Australian people for the centenary of Gallipoli and all the other activities in the First World War.
