Ruins of the Medieval Kalamita fortress is one of the most interesting and absorbing places in the Crimea. Let’s have a tour over stone remains of the past might and then get inside the Kalamita caves.

The unique thing about the fortress is that it is situated on a rock plateau which used to be a monastery with numerous hollowed out cells. The first fortifications were constructed in the 6 – 7 centuries and, taking into consideration the height of the rock, it was not so easy to seize.

The moat and one of the towers. The moat is quite deep – up to 3 meters in some places. On the picture one can clearly see casemates from which the defenders used to shoot the feet of attackers. Later the Turkish invaders turned casemates into burying places.

Behind this wall were stone quarries. At a distance there is already a modern quarry.

These are the very stone quarries, St. Clement is believed to have worked here.

Behind the quarries there is a steep, not so easy to climb, which was a natural defence from this side.

The very steep.

That is how the plateau looks like. One can notice cells where people used to live.

Saying good bye to the Kalamita ruins.

After the ruins it is very interesting to peep into the cave settlement. In the picture above one may see the view from a cave window.

Kalamita fortress used to be in this rock, however, there are also modern adits here.
