Americans shop. Chinese people save. That, at least, has been the lesson of the U.S.-China economic relationship, one borne out by a $250 billion trade gap and China's roughly $900 billion in U.S. Treasury holdings. But a new study suggests things are changing.A major buying boom is taking off in China, in part due to the fact that consumers here have largely gone unscathed by the global financial downturn that deeply scarred their counterparts in the U.S., investment group CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets says in a new report, 'Contrasting Spirits: Chinese vs. American Households.'The Chinese economic outlook─a rosy one in which 42% have seen their incomes rise in the last year and 54% believe their incomes will increase in the upcoming year─is giving consumers the impetus to pull out their wallets and buy TV sets, phones, and computers in numbers that are on par with U.S. shoppers, the report said. What's more, Chinese consumers are buying at a quicker pace: CLSA found that 24% of Chinese, compared to 18% of Americans, replaced their TV's within the past three years, and 72% of Chinese bought new mobile phones in the same period, while 62% of U.S. consumers updated theirs.Three years after the subprime lending crisis triggered the worst American recession in eight decades, many U.S. consumers remain plagued employment woes and economic hopelessness. A total of 63% Americans watched their income decline since 2008, a quarter of whom lost more than 20% of their salaries, the report found. Only one in ten Americans say their lives are better now than were a year ago.U.S. consumers are cutting back on clothing, grocery, dining, entertainment and any other expense they consider extraneous, the report found, while a majority of Americans have lost faith in the government's ability to dig the country out of the downturn. The median personal savings rate has jumped to 5%, up from 2.9% a decade ago, according to CLSA.While the median household disposable income in the U.S., more than $60,000, is double that in China, Chinese consumers─despite their reputation for saving─are more and more willing to splurge: 36% will pay a premium for branded products, compared to 24% in the U.S., CLSA found. Meanwhile, one in every five Chinese consumers is planning to buy a car in the next year and 94% are dining out at least once a week. And there will soon be more spenders in the pool: The Chinese middle class is poised to rise to 250 million in the next five years, or 80% of the U.S. population, up from an estimated 148 million, the report said, without defining what it meant by 'middle class.'CLSA surveyed 1,766 U.S. families across 50 states and 1,668 Chinese families in 15 of China's cities, including top tier cities Beijing and Shanghai and the lower tier cities Wuhan and Zhengzhou.A side-by-side look at some of the other numbers:* Households with two people employed: China- 72%; U.S.- 36%* Savings per household: China - 28% of income; U.S. 5% of income* Spending on rent: China - 12% of income; U.S. 30%* Spending on groceries: China 29% of income; U.S. 17% of income* Spending on clothing: China 11% of income; U.S. 6% of income* Purchased a computer in the last year: China 37%; U.S. 35%* Credit card spending: China - 38% plan to charge more; U.S. 7% plan to charge more. Laurie Burkitt
