China's filter membrane market

The filter membranes market in China is
estimated to be worth around RMB 8.8 Bn for
YE 2009 and experienced a growth rate of
27% in 2009. This is mainly because of
recently established regulations in response
to issues such as water shortages and
contamination. Exports are estimated at
around RMB 2 Bn.

The biggest end user industries are the
chemicals, power and pharmaceuticals
markets, in descending order of market size.
Other end user markets include electronics,
food and beverage, water supply and
metallurgy. These industries mainly use
membranes for a range of applications,
mainly being wastewater treatment,
industrial pure water and solution purification,
together accounting for 59% of the market.
Other applications include water desalination,
drinking water and boiler water.

The market consists mostly of reverse
osmosis and ultrafiltration membranes; the
market for microfiltration and nanofiltration
membranes are much smaller. Currently the
fastest growing market is the ultrafiltration
sector, but it is already a widespread product
with technical capabilities that are below
more advanced types such as reverse
osmosis. Whether buyers will switch to using
higher degrees of filtration will depend on
regulations and product development in key
end user markets such as chemicals and
pharmaceuticals.

There are many buyers and sellers. Currently
foreign firms control 63% of the market
share; the two market leaders are Dow
Chemical and Hydranautics with market
shares of 14.5% and 9.8%, respectively.
Companies are also planning to expand
production capacity in expectation of high
growth. The number of players in the market
is increasing. Many domestic suppliers are
smaller companies and the quality of their
products is sometimes questionable. Copied
technology is also common. General
understanding and awareness of safety and
product quality is not uniform among different regions.
