Tight-lipped elders used to say, “It’s not what you want in thisworld, but what you get.”
Psychology teaches that you do get what you want if you know whatyou want and want the right things.
You can make a mental blueprint of a desire as you would make ablueprint of a house, and each of us is continually making these blueprints inthe general routine of everyday living. If we intend to have friends to dinner, we plan the menu, make ashopping list, decide which food to cook first, and such planning is anessential for any type of meal to be served.
Likewise, if you want to find a job, take a sheet of paper, and writea brief account of yourself. In making a blueprint for a job, begin with yourself, for when youknow exactly what you have to offer, you can intelligently plan where to sellyour services.
This account of yourself is actually a sketch of your working lifeand should include education, experience and references.Such an account is valuable. It can be referred to in fillingout standard application blanks and is extremely helpful in personal interviews. While talking to you, you could-beemployer is deciding whether your education, your experience, and otherqualifications, will pay him to employ you and your “wares” and abilities mustbe displayed in an orderly and reasonably connected manner.
When you have carefully prepared a blueprint of your abilities anddesires, you have something tangible to sell. Then you are ready to hunt for a job.Get all the possible information about your could-be job.Make inquiries as to the detailsregarding the job and the firm.Keep your eyes and ears open, and use your own judgment.Spend a certain amount of time eachday seeking the employment you wish for, and keep in mind: Securing a job isyour job now.

Birds that are literally half asleep--with one brain hemispherealert and the other sleeping--control which side of the brain remains awake, according to a new study of sleeping ducks.Earlier studies have documented half brain sleep in a wide range ofbirds. The brainhemispheres take turns sinking into the sleep stage characterized by slow brainwaves. The eyecontrolled by the sleeping hemisphere keeps shut, while the wakefulhemisphere's eye stays open and alert.Birds also can sleep with both hemispheres resting at once.
Decades of studies of bird flocks led researchers to predict extraalertness in the more vulnerable, end of the row sleepers.Sure enough, in the end birdstended to watch carefully on the side away from their companions.Ducks in the inner spots showed nopreference for gaze direction.
Also, birds dozing(打盹) at the endof the line resorted to singlehemisphere sleep, rather than total relaxation, more often than inner ducks did.Rotating 16 birds through the positions in a four duck row, theresearchers found outer birds half asleep during some 32 percent of dozing timeversus about 12 percent for birds in internal spots.
"We believe this is the first evidence for an animalbehaviorally controlling sleep and wakefulness simultaneously in differentregions of the brain,"the researchers say.
The results provide the best evidence for a long standingsupposition that single hemisphere sleep evolved as creatures scanned forenemies.Thepreference for opening an eye on the lookout side could be widespread, hepredicts. He's seen itin a pair of birds dozing side by side in the zoo and in a single pet birdsleeping by a mirror. The mirror side eye closed as if the reflection were companion andthe other eye stayed open.
Useful as half sleeping might be, it's only been found in birds andsuch water mammals(哺乳动物) as dolphins, whales, and seals.Perhaps keeping one side of the brain awake allows a sleeping animalto surface occasionally to avoid drowning.
Studies of birds may offer unique insights into sleep.Jerome M.Siegel of the UCLA says he wondersif birds' half brain sleep "is just the tip of the iceberg (冰山)" He speculates that moreexamples may turn up when we take a closer look at other species.

A nine year old schoolgirl single handedly cooks up a science fairexperiment that ends up debunking(揭穿……的真相) a widelypracticed medical treatment.Emily Rosa's target was a practice known as therapeutic(治疗的) touch (TT for short), whose advocates manipulatepatients' "energy field"to make them feel better and even, say some,to cure them of various ills.Yet Emily's test shows that these energy fields can't be detected, even by trained TT practitioners (行医者).Obviously mindful of the publicity value of the situation, Journaleditor George Lundberg appeared on TV to declare, "Age doesn't matter. It's good science that matters, andthis is good science."
Emily's mother Linda Rosa, a registered nurse, has been campaigningagainst TT for nearly a decade.Linda first thought about TT in the late '80s, when she learned itwas on the approved list for continuing nursing education in Colorado. Its 100,000 trained practitioners (48,000 in the U.S.) don't even touch their patients.Instead, they waved their hands a few inches from the patient'sbody, pushing energy fields around until they’re in "balance." TT advocates say thesemanipulations can help heal wounds, relieve Pain and reduce fever. The claims are taken seriouslyenough that TT therapists are frequently hired by leading hospitals, at up to $70 an hour, to smooth patients' energy, sometimes during surgery.Yet Rosa could not find anyevidence that it works. To provide such proof, TT therapists would have to sit down forindependent testing--something they haven't been eager to do, even though JamesRandi has offered more than $1 million to anyone who can demonstrate theexistence of a human energy field.(He's had one taker so far.She failed.) A skeptic might conclude that TT practitioners are afraid to laytheir beliefs on the line. But who could turn down an innocent fourth grader? Says Emily: “Ithink they didn't take me very seriously because I'm a kid."
The experiment was straight forward: 21 TT therapists stuck theirhands, palms up, through a screen.Emily held her own hand over one of theirs left or right and thepractitioners had to say which hand it was. When the results were recorded, they'd done no better than theywould have by simply guessing. If there was an energy field, they couldn't feel it.
72.Which of the following is evidence that TT is widely practiced?
A.TT has beenin existence for decades.
B.Many patientswere cured by therapeutic touch.
C.TT therapistsare often employed by leading hospitals.
D.More than100,000 people are undergoing TT treatment.

A.to see why TTcould work the way it did
B.to find outhow TT cured patients' illnesses
C.to testwhether she could sense the human energy field
D.to testwhether a human energy field really existed 
75.Why did some TT practitioners agree to be the subjects of Emil'sexperiment?
A.It involvednothing more than mere guessing.
B.They thoughtit was going to be a lot of fun.
C.It was morestraightforward than other experiments.

What accountsfor the great outburst of major inventions in early America -- breakthroughs such asthe telegraph, the steamboat and the weaving machine?
Among the manyshaping factors, I would single out the country’s excellent elementary schools:a labor force that welcomed the new technology; the practice of giving premiumsto inventors; and above all the American genius for nonverbal, “spatial”thinking about things technological.
Why mention theelementary schools? Because thanks to these schools our early mechanics, especially in the New England and Middle Atlantic states, were generallyliterate and at home in arithmetic and in some aspects of geometry andtrigonometry.
Acute foreignobservers related American adaptiveness and inventiveness to thiseducational-advantage.As a member of a British commission visiting here in 1853 reported,“With a mind prepared by thorough school discipline, the American boy developsrapidly into the skilled workman.”
A furtherstimulus to invention came from the “premium” system, which preceded our patentsystem and for years ran parallel with it.This approach, originated abroad, offered inventors medals, cashprizes and other incentives.
In the UnitedStates, multitudes of premiums for new devices were awarded at country fairsand at the industrial fairs in major cities.Americans flocked to these fairs to admire the new machines and thusto renew their faith in the beneficence of technological advance.
Given thisoptimistic approach to technological innovation, the American worker tookreadily to that special kind of nonverbal thinking required in mechanicaltechnology. As EugeneFerguson has pointed out, “A technologist thinks about objects that cannot bereduced to unambiguous verbal descriptions: they are dealt with in his mind bya visual, nonverbal process...The designer and the inventor...are able to assemble and manipulate in their minds devices that asyet do not exist.”
This nonverbal“spatial” thinking can be just as creative as painting and writing.Robert Fulton once wrote, “Themechanic should sit down among levers, screws, wedges, wheels, etc., like a poet among the letters ofthe alphabet, considering them as an exhibition of his thoughts, in which a newarrangement transmits a new idea.”
When all theseshaping forces -- schools, open attitudes, the premium system, a genius forspatial thinking -- interacted with one another on the rich U.S.mainland, they produced that American characteristic, emulation.Today that word implies mereimitation. But inearlier times it meant a friendly but competitive striving for fame andexcellence.
76.According to the author, the great outburst of major inventions inearly America was in a large part due to ________.
A.elementary schools                                       B.enthusiastic workers
C.the attractive premium system                        D.a special way of thinking
77.It is implied that adaptiveness and inventiveness of the earlyAmerican mechanics ________.
A.benefited a lot from theirmathematical knowledge
B.shed light on disciplined schoolmanagement
C.was brought about by privilegedhome training
D.owed a lot to the technologicaldevelopment
78.A technologist can be compared to an artist because ________.
A.they are both winners of awards
B.they are both experts in spatialthinking
C.they both abandon verbaldescription
D.they both use various instruments
79.The best title for this passage might be ________.
A.Inventive Mind                                                 B.Effective Schooling
C.Ways of Thinking                                       D.Outpouring of Inventions

Turning off the monitor and removing the mouse soon makes a webdeveloper aware of the problems that arise when browsing web pages withoutvision.Speech outputis essential (and/orBraille) in order forthose who cannot see the text and pictures to be able to access the content.
81.__________
Screen readers use synthesized(合成的)speech and Braille is provided through a series of pins that move upand down (refreshable) as part of a Braille device whichsit alongside a keyboard.Screen readers tell the user about all aspects of the page and allnavigational links as well as menu items.
82._________
They are verbose(冗长的) and tiring to listen to.A new user may only be able to cope with speeds of around 150 wordsper minute but an accomplished user has the speed set at around 250 - 300 wordsper minute, this is similar to average reading speeds. However, we do not read all that ison a web page and scanning or skipping items is the norm but with a screenreader this
is not always possible unless the site hasbeen regularly visited.Too many navigational elements, often repeated on all pages can bevery time consuming.
83._________
Multimedia is often a problem but for example, if there are accessibleMP3 players available, new versions of screen readers will often re-format theweb pages to make them readable, and provide separate lists for links and othernavigational aids to speed the process. They cope better with frames and tables but only if they are writtencorrectly.
84._________
People with weak eyesight may have a restricted field of view, problemswith reading small or moving elements, and recognizing text with poor contrastor color choices. They may requirescreen magnification, better color contrast or glare filters.Screen magnification programs areused to enlarge text and pictures and can also provide focus within a smallarea with an enlarged cursor or pointer.

It'snot what you want in this world that matters, but what you get (that matters).

The results provide the bestevidence for along standing supposition that singlehemisphere sleep evolved as
creatures scanned for enemies.(这些研究结果为一个长久以来的假设提供了最好的证据,即单侧脑睡眠是在生物警惕敌人过程中进化形成的。)
Perhaps keeping one side of the brain awake allows a sleeping animalto surface occasionally to avoid
B)emerge fromwater now and then to breathe(不时浮出水面来呼吸)是正确答案。
TextC
The claims are taken seriouslyenough that TT therapists are frequently hired by leading hospitals.(这种宣扬很受重视,以致TT行医者经常受雇于大的医院……)
(To provide suchproof, TT therapists would have to sit down for independent testingsomethingthey haven'tbeen eager to do, even though James Landi has offered more than $ 1million to anyone who can demonstrate the existence of a human energy field.)
根据文章第1段我们知道,TT行医者所宣扬的就是通过调节病人的"能场"来治病(whose advocates manipulatepatient's "energy field" to make them feel better and even, say some,to cure them of various ills)。 If therewas an energy field, they couldn't feel it.(如果有一个能场的话,他们也感觉不到。)
A skeptic might conclude that TT practitioners are afraid to laytheir beliefs on the line. But who would turn down an innocent, fourth grader? Says Emily:"I think they didn't take me very seriously because I'm a kid".(怀疑的人或许会因为TT行医者害怕使他们自己处于被揭露的危险中,但谁能拒绝一个天真的四年级的小学生呢? 
TextD
77.[A]
