Angela Nugent sips her coffee as she peers through her living room window at the sun rising over the Florida coast. It’s a beautiful view but, if she ever gets tired of it, she can get behind the wheel and take her living room anywhere she wants.
Angela and her husband, Ray, are among a growing number of Americans who are taking their lives on the road, selling their homes and moving into recreational vehicles (RV for short.) In the past, RV life was more like upscale camping, but these days RVs come equipped with all the comforts of home: queen-sized beds, satellite television, and full bathrooms and kitchens. The larger ones have enough room for a family of six to live comfortable.
RV sales have jumped dramatically over the past few years, as baby boomers retire and look for a comfortable way to travel and enjoy their golden years. The flexibility of the RV-lifestyle lets them head south in the winter and back up north in summer. RV parks, scattered across the country, offer water and electricity, and RV owners often have new neighbors every week.
“Last time we went traveling, we had all these different expenses,”says Roy.“Airfare, car rental, hotel, restaurants–it really added up to a lot of money. With the RV we don’t have to worry about any of those things. Plus we get the added bonus of living in our own home wherever we go. It’s really the best way to travel.”
