Beauty, it appears, really is onlyskin-deep. According to new research those with symmetrical facialfeatures – regarded by many as the more attractive – are significantlymore selfish than the rest of us mere mortals。

　　Researchers found they were less likely to cooperate in pursuit ofthe greater good and more likely to feather their own nests. The teamexamined the facial features of 292 people at the age of 83 who tookpart in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1921, a study that has followed theparticipants throughout their life。

　　研究者发现，那些俊男美女的处世哲学就是为自己搭建一个完美的宫殿，而无心估计他人的感受。据悉，这是研究人员从1921年开始，针对一共292名志愿者(如今已经高达81岁)进行实验而得出的结论，这组实验占据了他们几乎整个生命的周期。

　　They analysed 15 facial ‘landmarks’, including the positions of theeyes, nose, mouth and ears, and were able to compare the facialsymmetry of participants。

　　Those with asymmetrical faces tended to be less healthy and morelikely to have experienced deprived childhoods. Factors such as a lackof nutrition, illness, exposure to cigarette smoke and pollution lefttheir mark, the researchers concluded。

　　对于样貌是否美观，这人是美还是难看，评价的标准不一，众口难调。但是，研究者还是从实验出得出一些“经验性”的结论供大家分析，他们总结出人体部位供15处地方可以作为评价美丑的标准，比如：眼睛的位置、鼻子、嘴巴还有等多等等。那些脸部五官不大匀称的人被研究者称为长相不佳的人，他们的健康状况不是很好，更有可能童年不幸福。据分析，长相不好还有可能是后天造成的，比如说营养缺乏、长期吸二手烟或者居住在重度污染的环境中都有可能影响人们的后天长相。

　　Even those who went from rags to riches could not escape thetell-tale signs. Deep lines and weather-beaten skin were instantgiveaways about their hard lives, they said. ‘As people with symmetricalfaces tend to be healthier and more attractive, they are also moreself-sufficient and have less of an incentive to cooperate and seek helpfrom others,’ the study found。
