Algerian security services are investigating the origin of smuggled arms from Libya to Algeria, local media reported Thursday.

The local Arabic daily ElKhabar newspaper on Thursday quoted a security source as saying that army forces have intercepted 218 pieces of weapons, which arm dealers and militants attempted to smuggle from Libya.

The source specified that the Algerian security services, who are tracking down arm traffickers operating along the eastern border with Libya to the African Sahel region and the Algerian Sahara, have managed to identify the Libyans who participated in selling weapons to extremist militants and traffickers.

Investigators are due to find out the origin of the seized arms, which include light and heavy machine guns, pistols and sniper rifles, remote explosive devices, tens of thousands of machine guns bullets, as well as RPG rocket launchers and a significant amount of powerful explosives.

The source added that most of the seized weapons of arrested smugglers and terrorists on the border with Libya and Niger were likely looted from army camps in eastern Libya.
