Last year, a Taiwanese circus performer, Huang Ming-cheng, created a buzz when he set off on a journey across the country, travelling "on hand."

On Sunday, more than 500 people turned up at an event hosted by the 28-year-old, at which they tried to do handstands for the camera, with or without help from each other.

Huang, the founder of Taiwan's first solo circus, became a household name after he completed a cross-country handstand trip that spanned 150 days and 20,000 kilometers.

During the trip, he had photos taken of him doing handstands in places that are normally regarded as dangerous -- near cliffs, on rocks in the sea, on top of roofs, and even on the back of a scooter.

Huang told reporters Sunday that he hoped more people would follow their hearts and realize their dreams.

The first step is to try to hold a handstand pose for 15 seconds, he said. "You see things differently when you're upside down," he said.

With the encouragement of the organizers, some 530 people at the event did a handstand pose simultaneously four times at Taipei's Huashan 1914 Creative Park, for 15 seconds each time.

The youngest participant was a two-year-old and the oldest a 65-year-old man, according to the organizers.

The participants did press handstands and wall handstands, sometimes with the assistance of relatives or friends.

Bill Lin, 47, said he joined the event because doing handstands is a healthy exercise that can boost blood circulation and improve balance.

Tsui Che-ming, 16, said he was inspired by Huang's trip, and he would like to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional acrobat.

"Huang's trip is a reminder that it's possible to realise one's dreams. Money is never the problem," Tsui said.

Huang spent eight months working as a street entertainer to fund his handstand project in Taiwan. The photos taken at the Taipei event will be posted on his Facebook page and shared with his friends when he begins a world handstand project sometime in the future, he said.
