Fred Watson, the astronomer-in-charge of the Anglo-AustralianObservatory in New South Wales, says a total lunar eclipse occurs whenthe Moon passes through the Earth's shadow。澳洲新南威尔士的英澳天文台的FredWatson说，当月亮没入太阳的阴影时，就会发生月全食。
Professor Watson says the [en]refraction of the Sun's rays throughthe Earth's atmosphere causes the lunar orb to take on a spectacularblood-red colour during totality。

"If the Earth didn't have an atmosphere, the Moon would beinvisible during a total eclipse of the Moon because there would benothing illuminating it, but because we have an atmosphere you get thisquite eerie red glow, which is quitespectacular."“如果地球没有大气层，月全食时我们会根本看不到月亮，但正因为有大气层的作用，我们才能看到这种红色月亮的奇观。”
