Stargazers and astronomers will be looking to the sky in the earlyhours of tomorrow morning as the Moon becomes blood red in the longesttotal lunar eclipse in more than adecade。

Fred Watson, the astronomer-in-charge of the Anglo-AustralianObservatory in New South Wales, says a total lunar eclipse occurs whenthe Moon passes through the Earth's shadow。

Professor Watson says the [en]refraction of the Sun's rays throughthe Earth's atmosphere causes the lunar orb to take on a spectacularblood-red colour during totality。

"If the Earth didn't have an atmosphere, the Moon would beinvisible during a total eclipse of the Moon because there would benothing illuminating it, but because we have an atmosphere you get thisquite eerie red glow, which is quitespectacular."“如果地球没有大气层,月全食时我们会根本看不到月亮,但正因为有大气层的作用,我们才能看到这种红色月亮的奇观。”

He says if you could stand on the Moon and watch the total lunareclipse, the view would be even more dramatic。

"You would see the Earth blocking out the Sun but with this reallybright red ring around the Earth," hesaid。
