According to a recent research, living in the North means you are20 percent more likely to die prematurely than those in the South. Aneditorial in the British Medical Journal claims that those living innorthern England are a fifth more likely to die under the age of 75 andthe figure has "changed little between 1965 and 2008."

Experts analyzed trends for English government office regions, comparing the North with the South. They looked at the North East, NorthWest, Yorkshire and the Humber, East Midlands and West Midlandscompared with the East of England, London, the South East and SouthWest。

The number of excess deaths among all age groups has been 14percent higher in the North than in the South over the past fourdecades, according to the research. Inequality has been greater for men(15 percent) than for women (13 percent)。

In the editorial, Margaret Whitehead, of the University ofLiverpool, and Tim Doran, of the University of Manchester, call for "anational overview" of access to NHS (National Health Service) servicesfor different communities."Otherwise, the result could be chaos and aneven wider health divide," they warn。
