Heidi, who is thought to be about two-and-a-half years old, wasleft outside an animal shelter in North Carolina in the US, along withher sister, Naira. Then she was brought to Germany in May by animalprotectors and has settled down in Leipzig Zoo。
Heidi became known after reporters from the German daily Bild wentto photograph animals that will be part of a newly themed area at thezoo. After they became public, photos of the creature became asensation. Heidi has also inspired a song, written by Stefan Langner,and sung by three young girls, which has become an internet hit onYouTube。
Zoo officials say they believe the creature's eye problem could berelated to the diet she had before being abandoned, or because she isoverweight, which can lead to fat deposits around the eyes."Apart fromaesthetically, this situation is not a problem," the zoo says。
The zoo described the attention as "surprising and unplanned", andit responded by putting up a new website page about Heidi. However, thezoo does not plan to undertake any "active marketing" of Heidi。
