China is seeking to address the major challenges facing the world economy, in cooperation with other nations. The comments were made by Chinese President Hu Jintao, as he addressed the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday.


Chinese President Hu Jintao said emerging economies are contributing more and more to the world economy, and taking a bigger role in global economic management.


He called for a restructured financial system, to reflect the changing global dynamics.


Hu Jintao, Chinese President said "The mechanism should stick to the principles of mutual respect and collective decision making, especially with regard to enhancing the presence of rising economies and developing countries in the decision making process."


Speaking of the relationship between China and Russia, President Hu said the two nations are seeing a swift recovery.


And he spoke of expanding the already strong trade links between the two.


Hu Jintao said "During my trip to Russia, President Medvedev and I have decided to boost our bilateral trade volume to 100 billion US dollars before the year 2015. And double the number to 200 billion by the year 2020."


Russia's President Medvedev says his government is looking to revise its privatization plans by Aug 1st. He also warned against corruption, and said the country could face economic problems if it continues to rely heavily on energy prices.

Dmitry Medvedev, Russian President said "We understand that victory over corruption, without effective governance and a good quality financial system, will not overcome our extreme dependence on natural resources, and we will not achieve a high quality of life."


This year's St Petersburg International Economic Forum has attracted thousands of businessmen, scholars and researchers. The annual event, also known as the "Russian Davos", marks an effort by the Russian government to increase the country's attractiveness to investors.


The Forum is the main annual economic summit of Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The forum has been held in St. Petersburg every June since 1997.


Starting as an annual summit for Commonwealth of Independent States, it has now developed into a fully-fledged international event, known as the "Russian Davos".


More than 4-thousand delegates have gathered in the city this year, to attend the event.


This year's forum is presided over by Russia's Minister for Economic Development Elvira Nabiullina.


The forum's motto this year is "Leaders for the New Era." The main topics of discussion are: Ensuring global economic growth, Building a creative Russia, and Horizon-expanding technologies.


Besides President Hu Jintao, the list of world leaders includes the presidents of Finland, Spain, and Kazakhstan. CEOs of top international companies from more than 100 countries are also attending.
