Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met in Beijing on Monday with U.S. Governor of Maryland Martin O'Malley, pledging to promote the healthy development of bilateral ties.

Liu extended greetings to O'Malley and his delegation in light of the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on Monday this year.

The Dragon Boat Festival was first celebrated more than 2,000 years ago to honor Qu Yuan, an ancient poet who lived in the state of Chu during the Warring States period (475 BC to 221 BC).

"The road ahead will be long and arduous, but I will try my best to seek a way out," Liu said at the meeting, quoting Qu's famed poem "Li Sao" as a metaphor for China-U.S. relations.

Liu praised U.S. local governments' contributions to the promotion of bilateral relations, as well as their cooperation in areas such as trade and culture.

She called on the two countries to enhance mutual understanding, increase mutually beneficial cooperation and properly deal with sensitive bilateral issues.

Underscoring the importance of bilateral cooperation in economics and trade, Liu said China is ready to work with the U.S. federal government and its state governments to expand communication in the fields of economics and trade, education, culture and science.

O'Malley is currently visiting China at the invitation of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.
