Rain continues to drench drought-hit south China

China's meteorological authorities said Sunday morning that persistent rain will continue in drought-hit south China over the next two days.

China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) has raised the rainstorm alert to yellow from blue. The NMC issued the blue alert at 6 a.m. on Sunday -- the lightest in the country's 4-tier rainstorm alert system.

Further, the NMC forecasts heavy rain and storms for parts of southern China's provinces of Guizhou, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Zhejiang and Fujian.

While saying the rain should ease the drought plaguing the lower and middle parts of the Yangtze River basin, NMC experts also warned of possible mountain floods.

On Saturday, heavy rain hit Guizhou, Hunan, Hunbei, Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces. From 5 a.m June 4 to 5 a.m. June 5, some regions in the provinces of Hunan, Jiangxi and Anhui received more than 100 mm of precipitation.

While heavy rains are forecast for south China over the next few days, sunny weather will persist in the country's north. Some rain is expected for the northeastern provinces.
