Created by a group of China's most esteemed professors, Teachers' Day was celebrated in June in the 1930s. The Manifesto on Teachers' Day explained the professors' hope that the holiday would inspire the nation to:create better living conditions for teachers, safeguard teacher's work, improve teacher's qualities. In 1931, educators Tai Shuang-qiu and Cheng Bao called on an establishment of teachers' day to improve teachers' treatment, protection and promotion of teachers training. They gave out Teachers' Declaration and asked for the official agreement of teachers' Day and they celebrated by themselves for teachers in the Central University in Nanjing. In 1939, the Ministry of Education moved the holiday to August 27, the birthday of China's great teacher Confucius.  After 1949, the Central People's government resumed June 6 for teachers, the Ministry of Education gave a circular that local education workers, according to the actual situation to organize their celebration activities.
In 1951 National Education trade unions, educators are recognized as part of the working class. On April 19, 1951, Minister of Education and the Chinese Education Union Chairman of the National Committee issued a written statement that May 1 International Labor Day was at the same time celebrated as teachers' day. But this day lacks teachers' profession and the results were not ideal. Especially after 1957, under the influence of the "extreme left", teachers were ignored, so teachers' day has actually ceased to exist.

In December of 1984 the Beijing Evening Paper published an article citing a suggestion by Professor Wang Zikun who proposed that teachers be given their own day once again. The idea quickly gained support and a September 10th Teachers' Day was put into law the following year. Why September 10th?The reason to choose this day is because when the fall semester begins, a fine studious atmosphere will be created if activities of respecting teachers and valuing education are held. In recent years, the Chinese government has taken many measures to mobilize the whole society to respect teachers, improve the status of teachers and improve teachers work and living conditions. To further enhance the political status of teachers and social status and formation of respecting teachers, respect for knowledge and talent, to promote the development of education, according to NPC deputies and CPPCC National Committee members and the community, especially many teachers throughout the country, a proposal was put forward to the State Council on January 11, 1985, to the National People's Congress Standing Committee on determining the annual September 10th for teachers' day. On January 21 of the same year, the 16th National People's Congress agreed on the proposal, decided on September 10 for teachers' day.

September 10 was established for the teachers because freshmen at the beginning, began honoring teachers and it is easy to create an atmospgere of teaching and learning. Meanwhile, September has no other national celebrations and it is easy to focus on activities and to promote formation of respecting teachers, respecting knowledge and talents as good social habits in the country.

A Teacher's Day, honours teachers in China. Teachers' work to a large extent determine the future of our country. Teachers work with every family and every child. In human and social development and progress, teachers play a huge role. Teachers are engineers of human civilization. The continuity of the development of human civilization depends on generation after generation of good education. If not the teachers' hard and effective work, then the society, the state and the nation will suffer losses in civilization process. Therefore, the progress of a civilization is unthinkable without teachers.

Teachers Day is, interestingly, not observed on the same day all over the world. It is perhaps one of those few days which has a separate international day whose importance is superseded by the nationally observed day.

Taking a look at Teachers Day as it is celebrated across the world, in some countries it is marked by a holiday, in others it is a working day.

International Teachers Day as observed by UNESCO is October 5. Being held ever since 1994, it commemorates teachers' organisations worldwide. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.

China - Teachers Day was founded at the National Central University in 1931. It was adopted by the central government of the Republic of China, in 1932. In 1939, the day was set for August 27, Confucius' birthday. The People's Republic of China government abrogated it in 1951. It was reestablished in 1985, and the day was changed to September 10. Now more and more people are trying to revert the day back to Confucius's birthday.

India - Teachers Day is celebrated on September 5 in honour of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second president of India, whose birthday falls that day.

Russia - In Russia, Teachers Day was celebrated on the first Sunday of October, between 1965 and 1994. Since 1994, the day is observed on the October 5, coinciding with World Teachers Day.

The US - In the US, Teachers Day is a non-official holiday. It is observed on the Tuesday of the first full week of May. The day is celebrated with pomp and gaiety. A number of activities are organised in schools to honour teachers. The celebrations can continue for the entire week of May.

Thailand - In Thailand, National Teachers Day is celebrated every year on January 16. The day was adopted as Teachers Day in the island nation by a resolution of the government on November 21, 1956. The first Teachers Day was held in 1957. The day is declared as a holiday in schools.

Iran - In Iran, Teachers Day is celebrated on May 2. It commemorates the assassination of Iranian professor Ayatollah Morteza Motahhari. The renowned writer, a timeless teacher, was executed on May 2, 1980. On the day, students offer flowers to teachers to honour the sacred profession.

Turkey - In Turkey, Teachers Day is celebrated on November 24. Turkey's first president Kemal Ataturk dedicated November 24 to honour teachers and their profession. There is no holiday on this day.

Malaysia - May 16 is dedicated to teachers in Malaysia. The day is celebrated as Teachers Day in the country with great enthusiasm. The day is called 'Hari Guru' in Malaysia and is a working day.
