Grand Banks

(Grand Banks Yachts Ltd.)
(Kingship Marine Ltd.)
(Horizon Group)
(Kha Shing Enterprises Co.)
(Jade Yachts)
Grand Banks yachts have a sturdy appearance that would not look out ofplace on a small fishing boat plying the east coast of North America.Below decks the boats have modern, spacious cabins, but there areseamanlike touches, such as strong handholds and plenty of rich, darkwood.
'There is a sense of seamanship and blue-water cruising on aGrand Banks,' said Jim Rice, a former professional sailor in Hong Kongwho recently bought a 1985 Grand Banks 57 Europa for 200,000 euros(US$288,680) and had her restored at a cost of about US$150,000. 'Youcan spot us from as far as your binoculars can see, and know that she's aGrand Banks,' he adds.
Despite their classic American look andfeel, the Grand Banks yachts are built in Malaysia, and the company islisted on the Singapore Stock Exchange.
The Grand Banks story beganin Hong Kong's Junk Bay in 1956. The company, then called AmericanMarine, was founded by American yachtsman Robert Newton who started outbuilding custom yachts designed by some of the world's top yachtdesigners. Operations were moved to Singapore in 1969 and the companywas acquired by a new management team in 1975. An additional Malaysianfactory was built in 1994, and in 1987 the company listed on theSingapore Stock Exchange.
The financial crisis hit hard and salesdropped sharply in 2009. But Grand Banks's current chief executiveofficer, Robert Livingston, says there are signs of an uptick. Thecompany sold two yachts in Singapore and one in Japan last year, as wellas 15 in the U.S., he says. The firm also sold its first new boat inHong Kong in 20 years.
These days, Grand Banks is one of severalshipyards across Asia gunning for a bigger share of a market that's beendominated by Western firms. They produce yachts that will set you backanywhere from several hundred thousand dollars to tens of millions. Hereare five Asia-based yacht makers that are making a splash:
1. Grand Banks Yachts Ltd.
TheSingapore-based yacht maker builds boats with a heritage appearance --American heritage, that is. These boats look sturdy and seamanlike, butthey can also be fitted with touches of luxury, including walk-inclosets and professional appliances. Grand Banks boats start at about$750,000 for a 12-meter boat.
2. Kingship Marine Ltd.
Kingshipyachts are made in Zhongshan, China, near the company's Hong Kongheadquarters. Earlier this year, the company launched its Ocean SUV line-- the boats are intended to be luxurious but with long-rangecapabilities, similar to the auto industry's sports-utility vehicles.Kingship boats start at about $8.7 million for a 27-meter yacht.
3. Horizon Group
Foundedin 1987, Horizon is Taiwan's largest yacht maker by sales. Its 14-metersolar-powered catamaran -- appliances run on rechargeable batteries --is its cheapest boat, starting a $1.2 million.
4. Kha Shing Enterprises Co.
Taiwan'sKha Shing Enterprises is almost an industry veteran -- at least in Asia-- having been around since 1977. Last year, it delivered four boats, all around the 30-meter range.
It also produces the Monte Finoline -- priced at between $1.9 million and $15 million -- which isintended to compete with top Italian brands such as Ferretti and Azimut.
5. Jade Yachts
Theeight-year old Taiwanese company made a splash in 2006 when it wascommissioned to refurbish a 64-meter German research boat and turn itinto a pleasure yacht, named 'Amadeus,' for Bernard Arnault, the chiefexecutive officer of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA. More typicalofferings include the Jade 95 Explorer, a 29-meter boat with a listprice of $10 million.
