Macao to subsidize residents against rising inflation

The Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region will again launch a one-off subsidy measure in the second half this year by providing each permanent resident with 3,000 MOP (Macao Pataca) and each non-permanent resident 1,800 MOP to help them weather elevated inflation.

The measure was announced by CHUI Sai On, chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, at a question and answer session of the Legislative Council on April 20.

He said that the government listened to the views of the public and the community, and taking into consideration of public opinions, as well as the inflation data and the government's fiscal surplus in 2010.

After careful consideration, the government has decided to launch the one-off subsidy measure in the half second of 2011 to help residents resist against the current inflation. The government suggested providing each permanent resident with 3,000 MOP and providing each non-permanent resident with 1,800 MOP.

The total expenditure budget is expected to reach about 1.7 billion MOP. The government will submit a supplementary budget plan to the Legislative Council after the proposal was discussed on the Executive Council.

He also said that the government estimates that the current cash subsidy will bring short-term effects on the price level and it is estimated that the growth rate of inflation will be less than 0.5 percent.

He pointed out that the other measures to ease the inflation include encouraging enterprises to increase salaries, helping the middle class solve long-term housing problems, encouraging persistent education, promoting occupational diversification and professional certification, studying to enhance the tax exemption amount of occupation taxes, and further improving the retirement security system.

CHUI Sai On also said that the government will actively explore food supply channels in Macao to ensure the adequate food supply and minimize the intermediate links to lower cost prices. Meanwhile, the government will also regularly release information to the public to enhance the transparency, promote healthy competition, and stabilize prices.
