Avai pulled off an impressive result on Wednesday by holding Botafogo a 1-1 draw in the second leg the round of 16 in the 2011 Brazilian Cup.

The result propels Avai into the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Despite Avai's offensive dominance throughout the first half, neither team was able to score. The game's first goal came from Botafogo in the 72nd minute when Sebastian "Loco" Abreu took full advantage of a loose ball, tapping the ball into an open net.

Avai got the crucial equalizer in the 83rd minute. After Estrada was pulled to the ground by a Botafogo fullback, the home team was awarded a penalty kick. William drove the ball into the far right side of the Botafogo goal and past keeper Jefferson.

After the match, Botafogo's coaching staff stormed the field in protest. Head coach Caio Junior was expelled from the match after profusely protesting the penalty kick and the judgment of the referee.

Avai will face the winner of the series between Goias and Sao Paulo.

Eliminated from the Brazilian Cup as well as the Rio de Janeiro state championship, Botafogo will return to action only on May 22 on the road against Palmeiras in the opening round of the 2011 Brazilian Championship.
