China's consumer price index surged to its highest in almost three years in March, signaling the possibility of further policy tightening moves from the government to help rein in inflation as economic growth slowed slightly in the first quarter.

GDP increased by 9.7 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Friday.

The figure was down from 9.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010 but ahead of expectations of 9.4 percent growth in a forecast report released Monday by the China Center for International Economic Exchange.

Meanwhile, the consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose by 5.4 percent in March from a year earlier, the NBS said.

The figure is up from 4.9 percent in February and the highest since July 2008.

Food prices, which account for one-third of the basket of goods used to calculate China's CPI, surged 11 percent year-on-year. There were also signs of a broadening of inflationary pressures, with non-food inflation accelerating to 2.7 percent. Housing costs jumped 6.5 percent.

Analysts say the data released Friday showed that China's economy is still very robust despite the central bank's tightening policy, which many economists had feared might hinder growth.

"Our overall assessment is that economic growth is stable and robust, but inflation pressure is elevated, though definitely not out of control," Ting Lu, an economist with Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, said in a research note e-mailed to the Global Times on Friday.

He expected the next inflation peak to be in June at between 5.5 and 6 percent.

Signs that economic growth was still holding up despite tighter policies and mounting inflationary pressure would likely give the authorities confidence and leeway to continue tightening monetary policy, analysts said.

He predicted that the central bank would raise the reserve requirement ratio for banks again, possibly as soon as this weekend.

"There will be another two or three rate hikes in the remainder of the year and the reserve requirement ratio for banks may rise to 23 percent from the current 20 percent," he added.

Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday that keeping price levels basically stable was the most pressing of the government's macro-economic measures this year.

The government aims to keep the full-year growth target of CPI at 4 percent.

To mop up excessive liquidity in the market and ease inflationary pressure, the central bank also raised banks' reserve requirement ratios last month by 50 basis points, ordering China's major banks to keep a record high 20 percent of their deposits in reserve.

Market reaction was subdued Friday, largely because the numbers had been reportedly leaked one day ahead of their official release.

The NBS said it would punish those responsible for leaking the economic data after they confirmed the figures circulating online matched the economic indicators.
