Artists from 18 nations confirmed their participation in the 18th "May Pilgrimage," the largest cultural festival of the young Cuban artists, to be held on May 8 in the eastern city of Holguin, the organizers confirmed Friday.

Alexis Triana, president of the organizing committee, said 150 delegates confirmed their attendance.

According to Triana, the largest announced foreign delegations will be from Mexico and Canada and the two countries have kept a broad cultural exchange with the island for many years.

The Holguin May Pilgrimage is held annually and was originated from a religious festival which began on May 3, 1790.

The traditional festival was rescued since 1994 by writers, painters, musicians, researchers and became a space for the exchange and debate among artists from different continents and also for the research on historical and social issues.

Art critic and re-founder of the Festival Jorge Luis Sanchez Grass emphasized the importance of the festival as a "thermometer to validate the proposals from the new generations of Cuban and international artists."

Last edition of the May Pilgrimage 2010 included the exhibition of the "Portraits Imaginaries," a collection by the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso exhibited for the first time in Cuba.
