Public Works Minister Hernan de Solminihac said Friday that Chile's reconstruction will take at least four years after the Feb. 27, 2010 earthquake and an ensuing tsunami.

Solminihac told Radio Bio Bio that this process will take the four years of President Sebastian Pinera's administration.

"People always expect the government to solve problems quickly, mainly when people's daily life is without safeguard," Solminihac told the local radio station.

Solminihac said that the 8.8-magnitude earthquake "was the fifth strongest in the modern era, affecting 630 kilometers of the country, 70 percent of the inhabitants, 900 localities and 45 cities."

Solminihac said that among the main achievements were the repair of highways and airports and the restoration of the potable water in the affected cities.

He said that new schools were built so that students in the most affected zones would not miss the school year.

The earthquake and the subsequent tsunami waves struck the central and southern zones of Chile, leaving 523 people dead and 24 people missing. The disaster affected more than 800,000 people and inflicted extensive material losses.
