Top an ordinary glass ornament with a cheerful crocheted Santa.

Materials

• Size 10 crochet cotton thread:
  • 150 yds. red
  • 50 yds. peach
  • 50 yds. white
  • 25 yds. black
• Six-strand embroidery floss: black, gold and red
• B/1/2.25mm hook or hook size needed to obtain gauge
• Tapestry needle
• 2 3/8-inch or 2 1/2-inch glass ornament
• 2 1/2-inch wire hanger
• 1/4-inch white pompom
• Polyester fiberfill
• White glue (should dry clear)
• Glue gun
• Paintbrush
• Miniature teddy bear

Notes

• Work in continuous rnds, do not turn or join unless otherwise stated. Mark first st of each rnd.
• Use size 10 thread unless otherwise stated

Head & Body

Rnd 1: With peach, ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook. (8 sc made)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (16)
Rnd 3: [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] around. (24)
Rnd 4: [Sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. (32)
Rnds 5–10: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 11: [Sc in each of next 3 sts, sk next st] around. (24)
Rnds 12 & 13: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 14: [Sc in each of next 2 sts, sk next st] around. Fasten off. Stuff Head. (16)

Arm (Make 2)

Rnd 1: With peach, ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook. (8 sc made)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (16)
Rnds 3–5: Sc in each st around. At end of last rnd, fasten off.
Rnd 6: Join red with sc in first st, sc in each st around. Drop lp from hook.
Rnd 7: For cuff, working in front lps (see Stitch Guide), join white with sl st in first st, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in same st, [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] around to last st, hdc in last st, join with sl st in top of ch-2. Fasten off. (24 hdc)
Rnd 8: Working in rem lps of rnd 6, pick up dropped red lp and sc in each st around.
Rnds 9–16: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 17: [Sc in next st, sk next st] around. (8)
Rnd 18: [Sl st in next st, sk next st] around, join with sl st in first sl st. Fasten off. (4 sl sts)

Hat

Rnd 1: With white, ch 32, sl st in first ch to form ring, sc in each ch around. (32 sc made)
Rnds 2–4: Sc in each st around. At end of last rnd, fasten off.
Rnd 5: Join red with sc in first st, sc in each st around.
Rnds 6–21: Sk first st, sc in each st around. At end of last row. (16 sc)
Rnd 22: [Sc in next st, sk next st] around. (8)
Rnd 23: [Sl st in next st, sk next st] around, join with sl st in first sl st. Fasten off. (4 sl sts) Glue pompom to last rnd.
For suit trim, with white, ch 32, sl st in first ch from hook, (ch 2, sl st) in each ch across. Fasten off.
For beard, with white, ch 9, sl st in first ch from hook, (ch 8, sl st) in each ch across. Fasten off. 

Finishing

1. Using black floss, embroider straight stitches (see illustration).

2. Using red floss, embroider one French knot (see illustration) for nose and one on each side of nose for cheeks.

3. Using gold floss, embroider belt buckle as shown in photo.
4. Glue beard to face below nose.
5. Place suit trim around neck and down front of Body as shown.

Assembly Instructions

1. Attach hanger to ornament and secure. Straighten hook; slip straightened hanger through center top of head, working the rim or neck of ornament into the neck of rnds 15 and 16 of crochet.
2. When hanger and crochet neck are in place, hold wire hanger and crochet head as you lift crochet piece upward slightly to brush glue under crochet and onto ornament. Reposition crochet piece in place onto ornament. Let stand until dry (a cup or a votive candleholder can be used as holder).
3. Slip Hat onto straightened hanger, placing Hat onto Head. Shape and position as desired. Glue other pieces onto Head and Body. Let dry.
4. Rebend hanger to form a loop or a hook. If hanger hooks are not long enough to hang ornament on tree, bend hook into a loop so an additional hanger can be used when hanging.
5. Using glue gun, shape and glue Arms in place on both sides of Body. Glue other embellishments in place.
6. Using white glue and water (40 percent glue and 60 percent water), mix well to dissolve glue. Mixture will look like milk.
7. Using brush, saturate facial features to hold in place. Do not brush glue mixture on embellishments.
8. Paint mixture over crochet to cover. Be careful not to get glue mix on colored ornaments; it may remove color.
9. Hang ornament to let dry completely.
