这是一首表达爱情的欢乐和痛苦交织在一起的错综复杂情感的歌曲。歌曲巧妙地运用了生活中红、蓝、绿、灰和黑这几种基本色调惟妙惟肖地表现了一个失恋者对自己和恋人热恋期的美好的回忆以及失恋后的孤独，忧郁，沮丧，失落，悔恨和无奈的情感。蓝色在英美文化和一些其它西方文化中常常象征忧郁，惆怅，压抑，悲伤。因此这首歌又可译作《爱情是忧郁的》。这首歌其实是一首法国歌，1967年由法国作曲家André Popp 作曲，歌词也是法国人Pierre Cour 年用法文写的词。以后才由Brian Blackburn 为这首歌写了英语歌词。第一次演唱这首歌的是一个代表卢森堡参加欧洲电视演唱大赛，名叫 Vicky Leandros 的希腊歌手。她演唱的这首歌荣获那次比赛的第4名。从此这首歌就在全世界传开了。首先是在日本和加拿大演唱后获得了成功。然后这首歌先后被翻译成德语，意大利和荷兰语演唱，都深受音乐爱好者的欢迎。很多歌曲演唱大赛的选手都用它作为参赛曲目。很多世界著名的乐队如法国的保罗-莫里哀乐队，德国的詹姆士-拉斯特乐队，英国的曼陀瓦尼乐队等，以及著名演奏家如理查德-克莱德曼都纷纷演奏这首曲子，将其录成唱片，在世界范围内发行，很畅销。亚洲人，特别是中国人对这首歌和曲子更是情有独钟。不少港台早期拍摄和制作的影片，电视剧中都用这首曲子作为背景音乐。
