Herbert Boeckenhaupt’s secret writing
US Air Force radio operative, Herbert Boeckenhaupt, started spying for the Russians as a young man.
Between 1962 and 1966 he provided the KGB be US military secrets in exchange for money.
His tactics were often to use secret writing. Spies widely used secret writing to communicate with their handlers. Writing could be hidden behind photographs, in the case of sub-latent photographic images. The secret writing could be read after a chemical is applied to the photograph to remove the top layer and expose the words.
This tactic was used widely in 1960s Germany by both East and West German agents looking to pass secret messages.
After Boeckenhaupt’s arrest in 1966, law enforcement officers found secret writing carbons in his home. These took the form of paper impregnated with chemicals that transferred ink to a normal piece of paper when placed beneath it.
