Chinese Artist Creates Corruption Hall Of Fame

Chinese corruption convicts have a new place to hang their heads: A Hall of Fame.

Artistand filmmaker Zhang Bingjian opened an installation that, so far, features 1,200 portraits of corrupt Chinese officials, according to areport in the Toronto Star.

Zhang said the inspiration for theproject came when he discovered the depth of the corruption in China. 'Iremember being shocked, a little angry and then confused,' he said.

'Theidea,' Zhang told the Star, 'is to make people think, why is thishappening in China? Why do so many people do it? How do we stop it?'

Chinaranks 78th out of 178 on the Transparency International CorruptionPerceptions Index, a global survey-of-surveys that checks thetemperature of risk in a given country. It has vowed to get tougher oncorruption recently, and last month executed two former vice-mayorsafter they were convicted of bribery.

Chinese officials met overthe course of the year with the U.S. on the topic, and there's amini-boom in anti-bribery consultants there. The people have taken theinitiative as well, launching websites to track bribery, thoughgovernment censors have been blocking them.

To start his mission,Zhang hired 20 artists in the southern city of Dafen, China, and set upan assembly line for the portraits, each of which measures 50 by 60centimeters. An official has to have been convicted for a portrait to bedone. The spine of each piece comes with an official's name, title, crime and sentence received, the report said.

The portraits areall done in shades of pink, the color of the 100 yuan bill China'slargest cash denomination. Zhang said the project doesn't have anendpoint.

'We don't know yet whether this project will have a happy or a tragic ending,' he said.
