Talk Show Series I: Informal Discussion On Oslo Killing

Follow us to explore the European cultures and society before and after the Norway killing -

Hosted by Xu Qinduo and Brandon Blackburn-Dwyer. Article by Li Yancheng.

This intriguing and in-depth talk will guide us from pondering how to define Norway killer's action, to the need to seperate the ideology from the psychology issues, and to the reality that the European and even the US government should face to deal with, until the the left-wing and the far-right threat reflection, and eventually to the solution to prevent such huge tragedy in the future.

Several threads for discussion you might find helpful:

(1) The crulty Norway killer is just an extreme case of a emotionally twisted mad man. Whether the case is a terrorist alert depends on the levels. For Norway a country has only 4-5 million people, the death of 92 people is exactly a national tragedy.

(2) His thoughts are drawn from the knights, crusade stories. And there is not necessary association with the anti-immigration thought.

(3) how to define the action itself - just a man reaching out to destroy the society or an insane man with a twisted mind, just intimidation, a religious extremist movement, or right-wing ideology.

(4) European's long tradition of multi-culturalism, embracing tolerance and globalization. But there is a minority group in the society asking for the balance.

(5) The real issue: Islamic-phobian? It shoudl be combined with the financial crisis. Dig the inner fear of people.

(6)  3 countries leaders, including the UK PM and French President are advocating multi-culturalism. Their hands-off policy leads to more segmentations.

(7) They need to review their economic programs, the immigrates's fitting in the society. They have to face the problems embedded.

(8) Is the idea of multi-culturalism popular in the melting-pot US ? Not necessarily.

(9) The possible ties with Al-Qaeda or even Gaddafi if relating the NATO mission in Afghan. Or, should we have to seperate the action of a twisted mad man from the possible organization ties?

(10) Solution proposed should be re-embracing education and freedom instead of merely military and security measures.
