Bangladesh has summoned the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Sunday to lodge a protest against Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's gaffe at the meeting with editors of top dailies last week, local media reported Sunday.

The Indian Prime Minister's office posted a transcript of the PM's meeting with editors, where the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) quoted him as saying, "we must reckon that at least 25 percent of the population of Bangladesh swear by the Jamaat-ul-Islami and they are very anti-Indian, and they are in the clutches, many times, of the ISI (of Pakistan)".

Dhaka has taken objection to the prime minister saying 25 percent Bangladeshis are anti-Indian, The Times of India newspaper reported.

Although the PMO website removed it subsequently, this has become a huge embarrassment even though Indian Ministry of External Affairs put out an apology against the gaffe.

A spokesperson said: "Prime Minister and his Government and the people of India have the greatest affection for the people of Bangladesh and hold our relations with Bangladesh to be of the highest importance."
