People in Beijing spend 38 minutes on average to get to work under normal traffic conditions, the longest among 50 mainland cities, according to a report by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The 2011 China New Urbanization Report was released on June 23 in Beijing after a year of research by a team led by scientist Niu Wenyuan.

Niu's team calculated the commuting time in Beijing under normal traffic conditions, excluding traffic jams. Shanghai and Guangzhou cities ranked second equal with 36 minutes of commuting time.

In fact, many people may spend more time on the road than the time disclosed in the report as it does not factor in the time commuters spend locked in traffic jams, said Niu's fellow scientists.

The 2010 report shows that the commuting time in Beijing including traffic congestion was 52 minutes.
