Mother's Day sand draw
M... is for the million things she gave me,
O... means only that she's growing old,
T... is for the tears she shed to save me,
H... is for her heart of purest gold;
E... is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R... means right, and right she'll always be.
Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER,"
A word that means the world to me.
--Howard Johnson (c. 1915)

Considering the amount of love and care that a mother endows her children with, she should be thanked every day. However, since this is not always possible and makes the relationship too much formal, a specific day has been reserved for making a mother feel special and the day is called 'Mother's day'.

When a child is born, his or her relationship to their mother is quite simple. The baby depends on the mother for absolutely everything. The mother is expected to be completely responsible for the life of this defenseless little creature. When you think about it, it's perfectly understandable why mothers tend to have a hard time letting go of their children as they grow up. It can't be easy for them to realize their responsibility is slowly diminishing until someday they'll have no say in their adult offspring's future.

The History of Mother's Day
Celebrating motherhood is a historical tradition dating back almost as far as mothers themselves. A number of ancient cultures paid tribute to mothers as goddesses, including the ancient Greeks, who celebrated Rhea, the mother of all gods. The ancient Romans also honored their mother goddess, Cybele, in a notoriously rowdy springtime celebration and the Celtic Pagans marked the coming of spring with a fertility celebration linking their goddess Brigid together with the first milk of the ewes.
During the 17th century, those living on the British isles initiated a religious celebration of motherhood, called Mothering Sunday, which was held on the forth Sunday during the Lenten season. This holiday featured the reunification of mothers and their children, separated when working class families had to send off their young children to be employed as house servants.

In the United States, Mother's Day experienced a series of false starts before eventually transitioning into the "Hallmark" holiday that we celebrate today. In 1858, Anna Reeves Jarvis was the first woman to hold an official celebration of mothers, when in her home state of West Virginia, she instituted Mothers' Work Day to raise awareness about local sanitation issues. During the Civil War, she expanded the scope of Mothers' Work Day to include sanitary conditions on both sides of the battlefield.
With Mother's Day just around the corner, the crunch is on to find the perfect gift. Of course, mom says that all she wants is a homemade card and maybe some breakfast in bed. But we know that even the most selfless mother (and aren't they all?!) wants and deserves a little pampering.

Listen to these words about moms----

—George Herbert(1593—1633)
There never was a woman like her. She was gentle as a dove and brave as a lioness... The memory of my mother and her teachings were, after all, the only capital I had to start life with, and on that capital I have made my way.
—Andrew Jackson
Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love.

My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.
—George Washington(1732—1799)
All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother. I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.

—Oliver Wendell Holmes(1809—1894)
The real religion of the world comes from women much more than from men – from mothers most of all, who carry the key of our souls in their bosoms.

For Mother's Day today, it's easy to just send our mothers an ecard and be done with it. But perhaps this year we should all take a little time to really evaluate what it must be like for our mothers to see us out there in the world. How difficult it must be to watch us try and fail, knowing they must let us figure it out for ourselves if we're ever to become healthy adults. I use the terms 'healthy' and 'adult' loosely, of course, as many us seem more like lost twelve-year-olds than responsible twenty-somethings.
Mother's Day, a special day for you to express your love. Here, on this occassion, please send your greetings, best wishes, thank-you notes or even apologies to Your Mother, the only person on the earth who loves you unconditionally……
