Many killed in Myanmar quake
At least 50 people have died after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Myanmar.

At least 50 people have been killed and 40 injured after a strong earthquake struck northeastern Myanmar near its border with Thailand, officials said.
"Total death toll has now reached nearly 50 and the number of the injured is about 40 while over 100 buildings were destroyed," a government official, based in the town of Tachilek, told the Reuters news agency on Friday.
The 6.8-magnitude quake shook buildings as far away as the Thai capital Bangkok, almost 800km from the epicentre, on Thursday night.
Thailand's meteorological department said it had registered six large aftershocks following the initial quake.
No tsunami warning was issued after the Myanmar quake as US seismologists said it was too far inland to generate a devastating wave in the Indian Ocean.
In Thailand's border town of Mae Sai, one woman was killed when a wall fell on her, but damage was otherwise minimal.
In Yangon Chris Herink, Myanmar country director for the charity World Vision, said there did not appear to be "catastrophic infrastructure damage" in the affected areas of Kengtung and Tachileik, although buildings were cracked and water supplies disrupted in some areas.
"Of real concern though are the more rural areas. There will be more, I am afraid to say, unhappy information coming throughout the day," he said.
Four pagodas in the historic town of Chiang Saen near the northern Thai border were damaged, including Chedi Luang, where its three-metre long pinnacle crashed to the ground, AFP news agency reported.
Rural Myanmar is underdeveloped, with poor communications facilities and little rescue and relief capacity.
The quake comes two weeks after Japan was hit by a massive earthquake, which unleashed a devastating tsunami that left around thousands people dead or missing.

Deaths reported in China quake
At least 25 killed and more than 250 injured in earthquake near border with Myanmar.

China Central TV said the quake hit while many people, including students, were home for a customary midday rest
At least 25 people have been killed and more than 250 injured in an earthquake that struck southwest China near the border with Myanmar.
The epicentre of the 5.4-magnitude quake, which struck at 12:58pm (0458 GMT), was located about 225km west-southwest of Dali in Yunnan province, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Thursday.
China Central Television said the quake hit while many people, including students, were home for a customary midday rest. The report said at least two students were among those killed, but didn't give details.
The state broadcaster showed several buildings with concrete foundations that had cracked and buckled.
On Friday, tremors from a separate quake off Japan's Pacific coast could be felt in Beijing, Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan reported. No injuries or damage was immediately reported in China from the massive quake, which has devastated much of northeastern Japan.
CCTV reported that about 100 armed police, firefighters and soldiers were using three excavators to try to rescue a man and a girl trapped inside a four-story building that had partially collapsed in Thursday's quake.
He Shuhui, head of an armed police squad, was quoted as saying they were trapped in a stairway on the ground floor of the building.
Another official on duty at the center, Gao Shaotang, said many houses had been toppled. Xinhua said the army was sending 400 soldiers to the site for rescue efforts.
Witnesses told the state news agency that parts of a supermarket and hotel had caved in, and that people were buried in the debris.
Thursday's quake triggered power outages in Yingjiang county, Xinhua said, adding that three aftershocks had been registered.
Xinhua said the quake-prone region has been hit by more than 1,000 minor tremors over the past two months.
A massive earthquake rocked the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan in May 2008, leaving nearly 87,000 people dead or missing.
