The body of Wu Jieping, a well-known Chinese medical scientist and former leader of the non-Communist party Jiu San (September 3) Society, was cremated on Wednesday.
President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, and state and Party leaders Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang bid a final farewell to Wu Jieping.
Wu Jieping was an expert of urological surgery and performed the first kidney transplant in China in 1960. He died on March 2 at the age of 94.
He was vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the eighth and ninth National People's Congress.
In a statement issued by the General Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Wu was described as "a renowned medical scientist, medical educator, expert in urology surgery and social activist, an outstanding leader of Jiu San Society...and an outstanding member of the CPC."
A native of Changzhou in east China's Jiangsu Province, Wu Jieping was born in January 1917.
Wu studied medicine in Beijing, earning his doctorate in 1942.
He continued to study urological surgery at the University of Chicago from 1947 to 1948. In the United States, he was instructed by famous Nobel laureate Charles Brenton Huggins.
As one of the founders of Chinese urinary surgery science, Wu has made remarkable contributions to the development of urinary surgery and medical science in China.
He established an independent department at Peking University First Hospital in 1949 by setting aside three beds for urology patients.
He also made improvements on vasoligation and proposed the procedure for the country's birth control policy.
He joined the Jiu San Society, one of eight non-Communist parties in China, in 1952 and the CPC in 1956.
In 1967, he became the head of the medical team responsible for the health of top Chinese leaders. Wu formerly offered treatment to five foreign leaders.
In 1995, the American Urological Association named him an honorary foreign fellow.
