Angry protests against Afghan President Hamid Karzai erupted Friday at the burial of the ex-Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani, the Los Angeles Times reported. There were emotional scenes as Rabbani's body arrived at the hilltop overlooking his Kabul home for the burial service. Gunfire was heard but police said they were firing shots into the air to disperse some in the crowd who had thrown stones at the cars of government officials. The ex-president and chairman of the Government High Council for Peace was assassinated by a suicide bomber at his home in Kabul Tuesday.

最佳县级城市榜单出炉
Forbes China released the List of Best County-level Cities on the Chinese mainland Friday. Kunshan of Jiangsu tops the ranking for the 3rd consecutive year, the Yangcheng Evening News reported. The following 5 cities are also in Jiangsu: Changshu, Zhangjiagang, Jiangyin, Wujiang and Taicang. Yiwu, Yuyao and Cixi – all from Zhejiang – dominate the other top 10 spots except the 9th, Yixing from Jiangsu. Most of the best county-level cities are located along the coastal areas of eastern China.

British drug regulators have granted approval to a US biotech company to conduct the first trial in Europe of human embryonic stem cells, the firm said Thursday. Reuters reported that Massachusetts-based Advanced Cell Technology will start the trial of its treatment, which uses retinal pigment epithelium derived from human embryonic stem cells, on 12 patients in Britain with a disease called Stargardt's Macular Dystrophy. This is the first clinical trial of human embryonic stem cells to be approved anywhere in Europe.

Stem cells are the source of all other cells. To get the cells, someone has to take apart a human embryo. In the US, former president George W Bush signed an order severely restricting the use of federal funds for embryonic stem cell research in 2001. President Obama revoked the order in 2009.

Julian Assange and the release of unauthorized documents have been locked in an unholy embrace ever since the founder of WikiLeaks started releasing government secrets from his website. Now in a move dripping with irony, Mr Assange's own memoir is being released against his wishes as "an unauthorized autobiography", foreign media reported. It was published Thursday in Britain, with extracts appearing in The Independent newspaper chronicling his early days as a hacker, his legal troubles and the setting up of WikiLeaks.

Reportedly worth a total of ￡930,000, Assange had signed a high-profile deal with some publishers. Assange said at the time that he believed the book would become "one of the unifying documents of our generation". But after seeing a first draft by his ghostwriter in March, the WikiLeaks founder told his publishers that he no longer intended to write the book. He formally withdrew from his contract on 7 June.

A Brazilian hired killer fell in love with his victim and faked her death with some tomato ketchup, the Daily Mail of London reported Friday. A housewife Simoes believed a woman named Araujo was having an affair with her husband. So she paid hitman Jesus ￡345 to kill her. But when Jesus saw his intended victim he fell in love with her and confessed the plot. The pair then conjured up the "ketchup death" plan to fool his employer. But the ruse was discovered 3 days later when Simoes saw the assassin kissing Araujo in the street.
