A caterpillar crept out from a plate of lettuce when a customer was eating hot pot at a Xiabuxiabu outlet in Haidian District, Beijing, chinanews.com reported. A waiter apologized, saying the vegetable wasn't washed carefully. The bar counter style hot pot was introduced to the mainland in 1998. The company said it puts its sanitation as a No 1 priority.

Beijing has seen a 6.6% decrease in the price of new apartments over the past 8 months, according to statistics released by the Beijing Real Estate Association Friday, Xinhua reported. From January to August, the average price of a residential apartment in Beijing was RMB13,874 per sq m. In August, first-time apartment purchasers made up 90% of all buyers. Moreover, prices of over 97% of apartments for sale are no higher than their figure in July.

Chinese search giant Baidu quietly launched new products for the Egyptian and Thai markets, the Wall Street Journal reported. The Egyptian site is an Arabic version of its question-and-answer service Baidu Knows, while in Thailand the company has launched a local-language version of its web directory Hao123.

Libyan fighters said Friday they had entered Sirte and Bani Walid, 2 of the last strongholds of toppled leader Muammar Gadhafi, Xinhua reported. Forces loyal to Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) captured the airport in Sirte, Gadhafi's hometown, after fierce attacks, the pan-Arab al-Jazeera reported, citing NTC fighters. The NTC forces also poured into the desert town of Bani Walid, about 180 km south of the capital Tripoli, and vowed to take control of it in the evening. Gunfire and explosions were heard near the town.

The UN General Assembly Friday approved Libya's National Transitional Council as the legitimate holder of the country's UN seat, at 114 to 17, xinhua reported.

Daniel Craig, who will star in "Bond 23", the next James Bond sequel, is likely to be signed as the official ambassador of Indian Railways, Dinesh Trivedi, India's railways minister, said in an interview. The Wall Street Journal reported that he hopes that having Craig as brand ambassador will revamp the reputation of India's rail network, which he says is in urgent need of an "image makeover" (see photo). No final agreement has yet been signed between the railway ministry and the production house, though Trivedi expects it to be reached soon.

The new Bond movie's production company is keen to shoot part of the film in India and this would include a train-based action sequence, Trivedi said. Among the conditions set by the ministry to allow them to film is that Craig lends himself to an Indian Railways television ad.

Chen Guangbiao, chairman of Jiangsu Huangpu Recycling Resources Co Ltd, smashed a Mercedes-Benz car in his company Friday to echo the "Car Free Day" in Chinese Cities on Sept 22, ce.cn reported. He bought new bikes and rode with employees, and promised to give subsidies to those who ride to work. Chen also suggested that the oil price should be raised by 50%, and the license plate fees set at varying levels according to car emissions, such as RMB100,000, RMB200,000 and RMB300,000.(See photo)
