UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday congratulated Baburam Bhattarai on his election as the new prime minister of Nepal.

"I welcome the election on Aug. 28 of Mr. Baburam Bhattarai as prime minister of Nepal and extend my congratulations to the prime minister," Ban said in a statement released by his spokesperson. "I hope to see the early establishment of an inclusive government through consensus and compromise."

Bhattarai, vice chairman of Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist, defeated Nepali Congress party leader Ram Chandra Poudel by garnering 340 votes from 575 Constituent Assembly members.

While noting the progress made in the past few months on the integration and rehabilitation of former Maoist army combatants as well as the future constitution, Ban urged the parties to "fully resolve these questions within the newly extended period of three months for the Constituent Assembly to complete its work," said the statement.

The secretary-general once again called on the parties to regain the spirit of consensus and cooperation and to carry out all outstanding commitments without delay, said the statement.

Ban reaffirmed the continued support of the United Nations to these efforts.
