Next September, some 100 students will study at Durham University for free, with free accommodation and an unexpected bonus 20,000 pounds ($31,665) a year in the first three years (45,000 pounds ($71,248) in the final year). Then these lucky guys will have a guaranteed job at the KPMG - one of world's biggest accountancy companies - and the title of chartered accountant. And they're not contractually bound to stay at the company。

Though successful applicants must get ABB in their A-levels and pass a series of rigorous interviews and tests, the offer does sound like a dream for most of the students facing rising tuition fees and slim chances of finding a good job. For the KPMG, the sponsor's part, the aim is to lure the "best talent" by the prospect of graduating with "savings, not debt" though at a cost of 200,000 pounds ($316,650) a student。

KPMG's boss Oliver Tant said: "For many students the debt they will face is quite intimidating and will discourage them from going to university. We are providing them with a route that enables them to avoid facing that challenge. Provided they do not buy a Porsche, they should come out of university with savings, not debt."

He added that KPMG's move was not philanthropic, saying in UK, skills shortage has made it hard to find recruits to compete in the global market. He also said he was in the "final stage" of discussions to expand the programme to other "top universities."

Before that, KPMG's rival Deloitte last month announced it will hire 100 recruits straight from school each year. Pricewaterhouse Coopers already runs a scheme for 100 school-leavers each year. However, neither offers a tuition fee-free degree。
