AQMI, a unit of the North African wing of Al-Qaeda, on Tuesday night attacked the Bassiknou military base in eastern Mauritania, the country's official news agency (AMI) has reported.

"After a retaliatory attack from the officers in this camp, the terrorists fled towards the Malian territory where they are currently being pursued by our forces," AMI said.

A leader from Bassiknou said citing a military source that "during the attack, 15 AQMI fighters were killed, nine others were arrested and two vehicles belonging to this terrorist group were destroyed by the Mauritanian army."

An AQMI spokesman in northern Mali was cited by the Nouakchott Information Agency (ANI) as saying that "this was a planned counter-attack in which fighters of different katibas (battalions) headed by renowned war lords in the sub-region took part."

"Our fighters were using 25 vehicles and we decided to attack Bassiknou camp in reprisal to the attack on our Wagadou cell by Mauritanian troops on June 23," the AQMI spokesman added.

A Mauritanian military source said that on June 23, the Mauritanian army attacked an AQMI fortified camp within Wagadou forest in north-east Mali, killing 15 terrorists and destroying several vehicles.
