The Malaysian government begins testing samples of sea and rain water and soil for radioactivity across the country in a precautionary move against possible radiation contamination as damaged nuclear plants in Japan sparked worldwide radiation concerns.

Malaysia's Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry said in a statement on Friday that the Atomic Energy Licensing Board is expected to start checking the density of Iodine and Cesium radionuclides in the samples of sea water, rain water and soil at various locations in the country and release the results periodically beginning Friday.

The precautionary move came following the detection of higher- than-permissible levels of radioactivity in the samples of sea water taken from near the earthquake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan.

Meanwhile, phone calls have been pouring in at the Japanese Embassy in Kuala Lumpur from the public for information about the safety of Japanese food.

The embassy said many of the phone calls came from restaurateurs asking if the embassy is taking steps to ease concerns about the consumption of Japanese food.

Despite the public concern, the embassy said food items imported from Japan were safe to be consumed as the country halted export of raw seafood from affected areas.

Rising fear over the Japanese nuclear crisis swept across the globe after seawater near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant's no. 1 reactor was found to contain radioactive iodine at 3, 355 times the legal limit.

The plant was damaged by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and a tsunami aftermath a twin disaster that killed more than 10,000 people and left some 20,000 missing.
