Young men often give flowers to young women when they are in love. This tradition may have come from Turkey.

In the 1700s in Turkey, it was quite popular for people in love to send each other baskets full of strange things. The baskets were delivered secretly to the person who was receiving it. Usually, an old woman who sold flowers or fruit on the street left the basket beside the person’s door.

These baskets included a variety of “gifts’: flowers, stones, feathers, wax, and even charcoal. Each thing in the basket had a special meaning. By figuring out the secret message contained in each item, the person who received the basket began to understand little by little the true feelings of the person who sent it.

This idea of sending gifts of love with secret meanings quickly spread to Germany, France and England. However, as time passed, only sending flowers remained popular.

An innocent bunch of flowers told young ladies about the feelings in the hearts of young men. Each different flower held a different meaning. For example, the flowers from an orange tree meant, “You are beautiful and pure.” Pink carnations meant, “My love for you is strong and great.” Yellow roses, on the other hand, meant, “I saw you with someone else.”

Many flower dictionaries were made to help young people in love understand the meaning of the flowers they received. Not all of the dictionaries agreed, however, on the meaning of each flower, so a person had to be careful about the flowers they chose to send.

By the 1880s, using flowers to send messages had fallen out of fashion, and the more direct way of sending love letters began. Today, flowers are still considered a lovely gift, but the meaning for each kind of flower has been lost.

Although many people agree that junk food is unhealthy and has little nutrition, they are still fond of it.

The name “junk food” first appeared in 1972. Over the years, it has become popular with many people. Suppliers are fond of it because it is cheap to keep for a long time. Many people are fond of it because it is easy to buy and tastes good.

Junk food is the food which has a lot of fat, salt or sugar. Scientists believe that eating a lot of junk food makes people overweight. People may also have heart troubles, high blood pressure and tooth problems if they eat too much junk food.

Other foods, such as roast potatoes and bread, not junk food. Also, candy and soft drinks are junk food because they have a lot of sugar, but honey and grapes are not. Many people prefer to have cereal at breakfast because it is healthy food, but breakfast cereals may have lots of sugar, salt and fat!

When children start eating junk food, they will have less and less milk and healthy fruit juice. This can make them weak bones. However, some junk food, such as chips, may be good to children because they may have necessary fats. However, since they are fats, children should not eat too much.

Long long ago, there lived in Greece a king whose name was Midas. He was a greedy man and loved gold better than anything else in the world.

One day, he asked a god to give him more gold. The god decided to punish him and said, “Your wish is granted already. Everything you touch will turn to gold.”

Midas was overjoyed when he heard this. The next morning, he got up early to test his skill. When he touched his bed, it turned to gold. “Gold!” cried Midas, laughing like a naughty little boy. “It works!”

Not only stones, flowers and the furniture of his house turned to gold, but, when he sat down to table, so did the food he ate and the water he drank. He was unhappy now. 第二节:信息转换(共 5小题;每小题 2分;满分 10分)

  阅读下面的短文,根据其内容 完成填空题( 1)至( 5)题。并将答案填写在第 II卷相应的位置上。

Have you heard about teleworking? It means working from a distance, in other words, not working in an office but working at home. You use the computer and the Internet to keep in touch with your boss, but instead of being tired of an office work, you can work in your own comfortable room.

The idea sounds nice, doesn’t it? You can do all your research on the World Wide Web, and send in all your work by e-mail. Well, that’s exactly what my boss said to me two years ago. “Jenny, how would you like to work at home? He said…

At first everything was great. My job was editing articles for a university, and so I spent most of my time sitting in front of a monitor and typing busily at the keyboard. Through the Internet I had access to all the information I could possibly want.

It was really good being at home, too. I didn’t have to waste any time traveling, and I could stop and make myself a cup of coffee or a sandwich if I wanted to – I was quite free and happy.

But then things started to change. I put on weight, because I wasn’t going out as much as I had before. I stopped wearing smart dresses, because a jogging suit and trainers were so much more comfortable. My friends stopped telephoning because I didn’t meet them on the bus or in the cafeteria.

I knew something had to change. I needed to get back out into the world. So I telephoned my boss: “Please let me come back to the office – I’m going mad on my own!”

And then goodness, he did. If you want my personal opinion, teleworking may become popular in the future…but not for me!

  Passage 1

One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished. Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said, “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not an appropriate topic. “Well, I’d better change the topic.” So I said to him. “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was magnificent.” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was interrupted again by his words: “You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn’t request you to do so,” he answered. Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “‘You don’t say’ actually means ‘really!’ It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms.” Only then did I know I had made a fool of myself.

  第二节 : 指导性作文(满分 15分)

Do you prefer city life or country life?

Do you like the busy city life or peaceful country life? Different people must hold different attitudes to this question.

Some people prefer to stay in city, because it is easy for them to enjoy various kinds of foods, both foreign and domestic. Apart from that, there are various cultural activities in the city. More importantly, they are more likely to find a job opportunity.

However, there are those who love the peace and quietness of country life. They very much enjoy the relaxed life pace, breathing the fresh air, away from the hustle and bustle of city.

For me, I prefer to live in countryside to have a calming and relaxing life. I love to watch the magnificent natural sceneries and listen to the bird singing in the tree on the wide space.
